The role of the EU in monitoring electoral processes: Protection of democratic standards
Credible and fair elections are vital for democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights, and EU election observation missions assess whether the electoral process was conducted in accordance with international standards for democratic elections. Observers question whether political parties can freely and openly participate in the electoral process; what access to the media do the candidates have; how voters are educated; and monitor the level of voter protection and security.
Since 2000, the EU has supported more than 70 long-term election observation missions in almost 50 countries.
