Entrepreneurship and local economy

The goal is to encourage people to become entrepreneurs

Economic growth and jobs in Europe depend on its ability to support business growth. Entrepreneurship creates new companies, opens new markets and cultivates new skills. It is an individual's ability to turn ideas into action, and includes creativity, innovation, risk-taking, the ability to plan and manage projects to achieve goals.

In the European Union, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the most important sources of employment. One of the main goals of the European Commission is to encourage people to become entrepreneurs and to make it easier for them to establish and develop businesses. At the same time, only 37% Europeans want to be self-employed, compared to 51% people in the US and China.

The initiatives of the European Commission for the promotion of entrepreneurship are summarized in the Action Plan for Entrepreneurship, which was adopted in January 2013. Their goal is to rekindle the entrepreneurial spirit of Europe through:

  • Education of young people about entrepreneurship;
  • Highlighting entrepreneurial opportunities for women and other groups with difficulties in starting a business;
  • Alleviation of administrative requirements;
  • Facilitating the attraction of investors.
