Environmental protection and climate change
Greater engagement is needed in the area of the environment and climate change
In accordance with the Agreement on the Energy Community, Bosnia and Herzegovina undertook certain obligations in the field of energy (electricity, gas, environment, renewable energy sources, energy efficiency). On the other hand, Bosnia and Herzegovina is significantly late in fulfilling its current and medium-term obligations when it comes to preparations in the field of environment and climate change, all in the direction of the accession/integration process.
The establishment of a harmonized legal framework for environmental protection, the State Agency for Environmental Protection, and a functional system for monitoring in the field of the environment continues to be a priority. It is necessary to improve horizontal and vertical communication and exchange of information on issues related to the environment and climate change between all authorities. When it comes to climate change, it is necessary to make significant efforts in terms of raising awareness, harmonizing with and implementing the acquis, as well as strengthening administrative capacities.
Additional support is needed to accelerate investments, especially when it comes to solid waste treatment, access to drinking water, and wastewater treatment.
